Questions people ask us most

How many spray cans do I need?

It depends on the project. A set of 4 wheels under 19 inches takes 2 epoxy primer cans, 2 basecoat cans and 2 clearcoat cans; 19-inch and larger wheels add one more of each. Every kit builder sizes the cans for your project, and one extra can always beats running out.

Do I need primer with spray cans?

Yes. The 1K Epoxy Primer/Sealer is the ground coat under every color: 1 light coat, wait 5 minutes, then 1 medium wet coat, then wait 1 hour after it is dry to the touch. Only add High Build Primer if there is damage to fill, and sand it before the epoxy.

How long do I wait between coats?

Basecoat: 2–4 medium coats with 10 minutes (or until matte) between coats, then wait 30 minutes after it is dry to the touch. 2K clear: 2–4 wet coats, recoat when the masking feels fingerprinty, about 10 minutes. Keep shaking the can between coats.

When can I clear over the basecoat?

Wait 30 minutes after the last basecoat is dry to the touch, then clear within 1 hour. Past 8 hours, scuff the basecoat with 600–800 grit until it is matte before you clear. Activate the 2K can, shake, and spray 2–4 wet coats.

Will it match my factory color?

OEMatch cans are mixed to your factory paint code for an OEM color-code match. Factory paint fades and varies from panel to panel, so blend the color into the surrounding panels and clear the complete panels. Done that way, the repair disappears.

Which kit size do I need?

Motorcycle: 1–2 quarts basecoat and 1 quart clear. Small car: 3–4 quarts and 1 gallon clear. Medium car: 4–5 quarts and 1–1.5 gallons clear. Large car, truck or SUV: 5–8 quarts and 1.5–2 gallons clear. When in doubt, size up.

What temperature should I paint in?

Most projects are sprayed in 71–90°F. Pick the temperature you plan to spray in when you build the kit and we match the reducer and activator speed to it: AR-3060 fast below 65°F, AR-3070 medium 65–80°F, AR-3080 slow 80–90°F, AR-3090 extra slow above 90°F.

Do I add hardener to the basecoat?

No. Basecoat takes no hardener — mix it 1:1 with Alpha urethane reducer (pre-reduced basecoat sprays as supplied). Hardener goes in the primer, 4:1:2 as a sealer or 4:1:1 as high build, and in the AC-4521 clearcoat at 2:1 with activator.

How long does the clearcoat take to cure?

Let AC-4521 clear cure 12 hours in a warm (70°F+), ventilated area with a fan running before you unmask or assemble. Wait the same 12 hours before wet sanding and polishing. To recoat or flowcoat later, sand with 600–800 grit first.

Which primer do I use?

Every kit ships with AP-7541 DTM Primer/Sealer. Mixed 4:1:2 it is a no-sand sealer: one medium wet coat, then basecoat once it is dry to the touch plus 1 hour. Mixed 4:1:1 it is a high-build primer for filling bodywork; sand it before sealing.

How fast does my order ship?

In-stock orders are processed in 1–2 business days. Orders with mixed paint take 3–4 days to process before they ship. Paint ships UPS Ground, and checkout shows the estimated delivery window for your address.

Can I see the color before I buy?

For custom colors, yes: order a painted sample and look at it in sunlight, shade and under shop lights before you commit to a kit. OEM colors are mixed to your factory paint code and blended into the surrounding panels, so you don't need a sample.
