Choosing the Right Reducer
Reducer controls how fast or slow your paint dries. The right speed depends on your spray environment.
Why Reducer Speed Matters
Reducer controls how fast or slow your paint dries. Choosing the right speed depends on your spray environment — mainly temperature, but airflow and the size of the job matter too.
Note that most Alpha Automotive Basecoat is sold ready to spray (pre-reduced) — spray it as supplied. Reducer is used for unreduced basecoat (1:1), the Pearl/Candy Carrier (1:1), primers in sealer mode, and to thin clearcoat where the TDS allows it. See the mix ratio reference for the exact amounts.
Reducer Speed by Temperature
| Reducer | Speed | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| AR-3060 | Fast | Cool temps (below 65°F), fast airflow, small repairs |
| AR-3070 | Medium | Moderate temps (65–80°F), general purpose |
| AR-3080 | Slow | Warm temps (80–90°F), full panels |
| AR-3090 | Extra Slow | Hot temps (90°F+), low airflow, full vehicles |
Rule of thumb: If paint is drying too fast and leaving texture, go slower. If it's running or sagging, go faster.
Hot, Humid, or Cold?
Hot shop (80°F+): Fast reducer will flash before the paint can flow out and level, which causes orange peel. Switch to AR-3080 (slow) or AR-3090 (extra slow).
High humidity: Don't spray when humidity is above 80%. Use a slower reducer (AR-3080 or AR-3090) in humid conditions — slower evaporation gives moisture a chance to escape before the film skins over, which prevents a hazy or milky clear.
Cold garage: Paint takes longer to flash on cold surfaces, so runs are more likely. Use a faster reducer, apply lighter coats, and warm the panels and the paint to room temperature before you start.
