Lacey Blair decided it was time to bring some serious color to her daily driver — a classic Dodge D150 pickup. Armed with The Spray Source’s Roxy Vehicle Paint Kit and a whole lot of determination, she took on the full repaint herself. No booth, no professional help — just Lacey, her garage, and one of our most stunning candy pearl colors.

The result? An absolute head-turner that proves you don’t need a $10K paint job to get a showroom finish. Here’s the full breakdown of how she did it.

Meet the Builder: Lacey Blair

Lacey isn’t your typical “I’ve been painting cars for 20 years” builder. She’s a first-time DIY painter who decided to tackle an entire truck repaint with zero prior experience. What she lacked in experience, she made up for with preparation, patience, and the right products.

Her approach was methodical: she spent weeks prepping the body, watching our tutorial videos, and asking questions in the TSS community before ever pulling the trigger. That’s exactly the kind of builder we love to feature — proof that anyone can get a professional result with the right mindset and materials.

The Color: Why Roxy?

Roxy is a candy pearl that shifts between a vibrant pink and a warm rose depending on the light. Over a white ground coat, it develops deep, layered flake that catches the sun and turns heads from across the parking lot.

This isn’t your typical “pink” — Roxy has depth and complexity. In direct sunlight it’s an electric magenta; in shade it softens to a sophisticated rose gold. The white sealer base allows maximum brightness and flake pop, which is exactly what Lacey was going for on her D150.

Every Way to Get Roxy

Whether you're painting a full vehicle, a motorcycle, a guitar, or just touching up with a spray can — Roxy is available for every project size. Each kit includes matched products sized for the job.

💡 Pro Tip

The white sealer base is key for Roxy’s full brightness. If you want maximum pink pop and flake visibility, don’t skip the white ground coat — it’s what makes this color truly shine.

Optional Add-Ons

The vehicle paint kit has everything you need to go from prepped surface to finished paint. But depending on where your project is starting, these add-on bundles can save time and money on the prep and masking side:

The Complete DIY Process

Step 1: Surface Prep & Body Work

Lacey started by sanding the entire truck down to bare metal in problem areas and scuffing the existing paint where it was solid. She used 320-grit for initial sanding and worked through the grits for a smooth foundation.

Step 2: Prime & Seal

Two coats of DTM Primer-Sealer went down over the prepped surface, providing adhesion and a uniform base for the color coats. After letting it cure overnight, she block-sanded with 600-grit for a perfectly smooth surface.

Step 3: White Ground Coat

The white sealer base coat went on in two medium-wet coats. This is critical for candy colors — the white base ensures the Roxy pearl pops to its maximum brightness and the flake lays down evenly.

Step 4: Roxy Midcoat Application

Three even coats of the Roxy candy pearl midcoat, waiting 10–15 minutes between coats. Lacey kept her distance consistent and her overlap at 75% to avoid striping. The color built up beautifully with each pass.

Step 5: Clearcoat & Final Finish

Three coats of HS Glamour Clearcoat sealed everything in, mixed at the proper ratio with the AH-7100 activator and AR-3000 reducer. After a 24-hour cure, Lacey wet-sanded with 1500 and 2000 grit, then buffed to a mirror finish.

Yes. The kit includes everything you need — DTM primer-sealer (your white ground coat), ready-to-spray Roxy basecoat, HS Glamour clearcoat, reducer, activator, and a step-by-step cheat sheet with mix ratios, flash times, and gun settings. Over 25,000 vehicles have been painted with TSS kits.
Not if you're using the vehicle paint kit. The Roxy basecoat included in the kit is pre-reduced and ready to spray right out of the can — no mixing cups, no measuring, no guessing. Just shake, pour, and spray.
No spray booth required. Many TSS customers paint in home garages. The keys are dust control (wet the floor, hang plastic sheeting), proper ventilation (at minimum a quality respirator and air movement), and following the cheat sheet for temperature and flash times. Spray when conditions are 65–85°F for best results.
A laminated guide covering every stage: mix ratios, flash times, coat counts, spray gun settings, and troubleshooting tips. It's included in every complete vehicle paint kit. Want it before you buy? Download the free PDF or order a free physical copy (just pay shipping).
Roxy uses a white ground coat (sealer base) for maximum brightness and flake pop. The white base allows the candy pearl to develop its full pink-to-rose shift.
Yes! Lacey sprayed her entire D150 in her garage with proper ventilation and a respirator. A clean, dust-free environment is important, but you don't need a professional booth.
We recommend 3 even coats with 10-15 minutes flash time between coats. Keep your distance consistent and maintain 75% overlap for even color coverage.
