Void Black hero — Hero Image

What does it look like when a TSS Professional Shop takes a Dodge Ram from primer to painted in Void Black? Michael Loving and the team at Rice Bowl Kustoms answered that question with a full ground-up repaint using our Void Black Vehicle Paint Kit. Booth-sprayed, no shortcuts, finished from sealer to clear with the same kit any DIY painter can buy off the shelf.

Void Black isn't just a black. Over a black sealer base, it goes deeper — that liquid, mirror-like finish you only get from a true automotive system. Rice Bowl Kustoms ran the full kit start to finish, and the results are exactly what the kit was designed to produce.

Meet the Builder: Michael Loving

Rice Bowl Kustoms is a TSS Professional Shop and a working paint-and-body shop that uses our vehicle paint kit on real customer cars from the ground up. Owner Michael Loving runs the shop, the booth, and the gun — this Dodge Ram came in for a full repaint and went out in Void Black, prepped, sealed, sprayed, and cleared in-house.

When a pro shop chooses our kit instead of a paint-counter mix, that's a signal. Our Vehicle Paint Kits are built to deliver shop-grade results because shops actually use them — not just hobbyists. Rice Bowl Kustoms' work on this Ram is a clean reference for what the kit can do when every step is dialed in.

The Color: Why Void Black?

Void Black is Alpha's deepest jet-black solid — a single-color basecoat designed for builds that need maximum depth and impact without going metallic or pearled. It sprays smooth and even, lays down with a uniform true-black saturation, and resists fading under sunlight. The whole point of this color is a black that stays black under every light condition and reads as deep as black can go.

Void Black is sprayed over a black sealer because that's the ground coat the color was designed for — black is what delivers full coverage, the intended jet-black hue, and the depth and saturation a solid basecoat needs to read its strongest. The full TSS system here — DTM black sealer, Void Black basecoat, HS Glamour clearcoat — is the same stack Rice Bowl Kustoms ran on the Ram, and the gloss off the clear is why this kit gets used on shop builds.

Every Way to Get Void Black

Whether you're painting a full vehicle, a motorcycle, a guitar, or just touching up with a spray can — Void Black is available for every project size. Each kit includes matched products sized for the job.

💡 Pro Tip

Void Black amplifies every panel imperfection. Plan extra time for blocking before you spray — wet-sanding the sealer with 600-grit and re-checking under panel light catches what the spray gun won't forgive. Rice Bowl Kustoms blocked this Ram before any color went down, which is why the finish reads as glass.

What's Inside the Vehicle Paint Kit

These are all the products included in the Void Black Full Vehicle Paint Kit. Every product is already matched and compatible — no hunting across brands, no guessing on ratios.

DTM Primer-Sealer (AP-7541) — Direct-to-metal primer that doubles as a wet-on-wet sealer. Mix at 4:1:2 with AH-7100 activator and urethane reducer to act as a sealer; in black, this is your ground coat for Void Black. See the TDS for full mix and use cases.

Void Black Basecoat — The star of the kit. A high-saturation jet-black basecoat designed for the TSS system. The basecoat in the vehicle paint kit is ready to spray right out of the can — no mixing with reducer required.

HS Glamour Clear (AC-4521) — High-solid 2K urethane clearcoat. Mixes 2:1 with AH-7100, no reducer. Wet, glass-like finish — exactly what you see on Rice Bowl Kustoms' Ram.

Alpha Urethane Reducer (AR-3000 Series) — Temperature-matched reducer for the sealer/primer. Pick speed by climate (AR-3060 Fast through AR-3090 Extra Slow). Note: the kit basecoat is pre-reduced.

HS Activator (AH-7100 Series) — Hardener for both primer-sealer and clearcoat. Match speed to your shop temperature. Works with AP-7541 and AC-4521.

TSS Cheat Sheet — Laminated guide: mix ratios, flash times, coat counts, gun settings, and troubleshooting. Included in every vehicle paint kit. Want it before you buy? Download the free PDF or order a free physical copy.

Optional Add-Ons

The vehicle paint kit has everything you need to go from prepped surface to finished paint. But depending on where your project is starting, these add-on bundles can save time and money on the prep and masking side:

The Complete DIY Process

Step 1: Surface Prep & Bodywork

Even on a clean panel, prep is non-negotiable. Rice Bowl Kustoms started by stripping the existing finish where needed and bringing problem areas down to bare metal. Any dents, rust spots, or filler work were addressed first — Void Black hides nothing, so anything left in the substrate shows through the final clear.

The whole vehicle was scuffed and feathered to give the primer a uniform mechanical bond, then wiped down with wax-and-grease remover. For shops handling beat-up bodies, our Bodywork Bundle has the body filler and abrasives for this stage. For sanding through the grits, browse the full OptiGrit collection.

Step 2: Sealer (Black Ground Coat)

Black is the recommended ground coat for Void Black because that's how the color was designed to be sprayed — black delivers full coverage, the intended jet-black hue, and the depth and saturation a solid basecoat is built to show. Rice Bowl Kustoms ran the DTM Primer-Sealer (AP-7541) in black, mixed at the sealer ratio of 4:1:2 — primer, AH-7100 activator, and Alpha urethane reducer. At this ratio, the AP-7541 acts as a wet-on-wet sealer that creates a uniform, opaque black foundation under the basecoat.

After the sealer flashed, the booth moved straight into the basecoat — wet-on-wet, no sanding between sealer and color.

Step 3: Void Black Basecoat

The Void Black basecoat in the kit is ready to spray right out of the can — no mixing cups, no measuring, no reducer to add. For a shop running multiple jobs through the same booth, that consistency is part of the value: every kit sprays the same way.

Rice Bowl Kustoms laid down medium wet coats with steady overlap, building the saturation until the panels read true black under the booth's lights. Over the recommended black sealer, the basecoat reads at its full intended depth.

Step 4: HS Glamour Clear (AC-4521)

The clear is where Void Black goes from solid to wet. Mix HS Glamour Clear (AC-4521) 2:1 with AH-7100, no reducer. HS Glamour is a high-solid formula with built-in UV protection.

On a shop build like this Ram, the clear off the gun is enough for showroom gloss without cut-and-buff. Most of the depth comes from the clear catching light against the black underneath.

Step 5: Cure & Final Inspection

The Ram cured undisturbed in the booth. For an extra step of finish, you can wet-sand any nibs or dust spots out of the clear, then machine-polish. On a shop schedule, often the gloss off the gun is enough — and it is here. For the cut-and-buff progression, browse the full OptiGrit collection.

For the first 30 days after a fresh paint job, hand-wash only with pH-neutral soap. Skip automated washes until the clear has fully cured.

Yes. The kit includes everything you need — DTM primer-sealer (your black ground coat), ready-to-spray Void Black basecoat, HS Glamour clearcoat, reducer, activator, and a step-by-step cheat sheet with mix ratios, flash times, and gun settings. Over 25,000 vehicles have been painted with TSS kits.
Not if you're using the vehicle paint kit. The Void Black basecoat included in the kit is pre-reduced and ready to spray right out of the can — no mixing cups, no measuring, no guessing. Just shake, pour, and spray.
No spray booth required. Many TSS customers paint in home garages. The keys are dust control (wet the floor, hang plastic sheeting), proper ventilation (at minimum a quality respirator and air movement), and following the cheat sheet for temperature and flash times. Spray when conditions are 65–85°F for best results.
A laminated guide covering every stage: mix ratios, flash times, coat counts, spray gun settings, and troubleshooting tips. It's included in every complete vehicle paint kit. Want it before you buy? Download the free PDF or order a free physical copy (just pay shipping).

Black sealer is the recommended ground coat for Void Black because that's how the color was designed to be sprayed — black delivers full coverage, the intended jet-black hue, and the depth and saturation a solid basecoat is built to show. White or grey sealers will work but you give up some of that intended saturation. For shop-grade results — like the finish Rice Bowl Kustoms put on this Ram — black sealer is the standard, and the kit ships with it included.

Yes. Solid blacks amplify substrate issues more than any other color family. Plan extra blocking time and use a finishing-grade putty (our Light Bodywork Bundle has Dolphin Glaze + OptiGrit) for any pinholes or feather edges before you spray sealer.

3 medium wet coats over the recommended black sealer is the sweet spot. Mix the Void Black basecoat straight from the kit, no reducer needed; check the cheat sheet for flash time between coats. The recommended black ground coat is what gives the basecoat the full coverage and depth the color was designed to deliver.
