Honey Twist hero — Hero Image Honey Twist

A 2009 Silverado 1500 in Honey Twist is the kind of build that makes you stop scrolling. Alan's Custom Body Shop took this truck down to bare metal, sealed it black, and laid Honey Twist over the top — an Alpha Custom Color that combines a candy carrier with a multi-tone colorshift, so the panels read green-dominant in flat light and warm into gold, bronze, copper, and orange as you walk around the truck. Pro shop, full-vehicle repaint, finished over the recommended black sealer for full coverage and the saturation this candy was designed to deliver.

Below, you'll see how it came together, the products they used, and the steps you'd follow to chase the same finish on your own build.

Meet the Builder: Alan's Custom Body Shop

Alan's Custom Body Shop (@ampcustoms on Instagram) runs full custom paint and bodywork out of a private shop, taking on everything from patina restorations to full repaints. They're a TSS Professional shop running our vehicle paint kit start to finish — DTM primer-sealer, Honey Twist basecoat, glamour clearcoat — to keep their customers' projects on a single, predictable system instead of mixing brands.

This Silverado was a metal-up rebuild, and the team took it through every step in-house: bodywork, surfacing, sealing in black, then candy gold over the top. They post the process on Instagram and Facebook for anyone who wants to follow along.

The Color: Why Honey Twist?

Honey Twist isn't one color — it's a candy + colorshift hybrid that flips between green, gold, bronze, copper, and orange depending on the light angle. Most builders are surprised the first time they see it sprayed: the panels read green-dominant in flat light, then catch the sun and warm into amber and copper as you walk around them. That multi-tone shift is the entire point of this color, and it's what separates an Alpha Custom Color from a flat metallic gold.

Honey Twist is sprayed over a black sealer because that's the ground coat the color was designed for. Black is what delivers full coverage, true hue, and the depth and saturation the candy carrier was formulated to show — every colorshift tone reads at its strongest over the recommended undercoat. Alan's Custom Body Shop ran the kit exactly as designed, and the panels are showing what Honey Twist was built to look like.

Every Way to Get Honey Twist

Whether you're painting a full vehicle, a motorcycle, a guitar, or just touching up with a spray can — Honey Twist is available for every project size. Each kit includes matched products sized for the job.

💡 Pro Tip

If you want every colorshift tone in Honey Twist to read its biggest — green, gold, bronze, copper, orange — take your final basecoat passes from a slightly farther distance than usual. The metallics lay flat instead of stacking, and the candy carrier catches more angles of light. Lock it in with a wet, even clearcoat and the full color range comes alive in the sun.

What's Inside the Vehicle Paint Kit

These are all the products included in the Honey Twist Full Vehicle Paint Kit. Every product is already matched and compatible — no hunting across brands, no guessing on ratios.

DTM Primer-Sealer (AP-7541) — Direct-to-metal primer that doubles as a wet-on-wet sealer. Mix at 4:1:2 with AH-7100 activator and urethane reducer to act as a sealer; in black, it's the ground coat Honey Twist was designed for — delivering full coverage, true hue, and the depth and saturation this candy was formulated to show. See the TDS for full mix and use cases.

Honey Twist Basecoat — An Alpha Custom Color candy basecoat with a green-dominant base and a multi-tone colorshift through gold, bronze, copper, and orange. The basecoat in the vehicle paint kit is ready to spray right out of the can — no mixing with reducer required.

HS Glamour Clear (AC-4521) — High-solid 2K urethane clearcoat. Mixes 2:1 with AH-7100, no reducer. Wet, glass-like finish.

Alpha Urethane Reducer (AR-3000 Series) — Temperature-matched reducer for sealer/primer. Pick speed by climate. Kit basecoat is pre-reduced.

HS Activator (AH-7100 Series) — Hardener for both primer-sealer and clearcoat. Match speed to your temperature.

Optional Add-Ons

The vehicle paint kit has everything you need to go from prepped surface to finished paint. But depending on where your project is starting, these add-on bundles can save time and money on the prep and masking side:

The Complete DIY Process

Step 1: Strip and prep the body

Alan's Custom Body Shop took the Silverado down to bare metal so they had a clean canvas to work with. For your build, start by removing all old paint, rust, and filler down to clean steel or a sound prior coating. Block-sand body lines straight, repair dents and imperfections, then work through progressively finer abrasives until the surface is uniform and ready for primer. Take your time here — every imperfection telegraphs through the candy.

Step 2: Lay the DTM primer-sealer (black ground coat)

Mix DTM Primer-Sealer (AP-7541) at 4:1:2 with AH-7100 activator and Alpha urethane reducer to use it as a wet-on-wet sealer. Spray it black for Honey Twist — black is the ground coat this color was designed for, and it delivers the full coverage, true hue, and color depth the candy carrier was built to show. Tack the surface clean before you start, lay even passes, and let the sealer set up to the proper window before going to basecoat. The sealer is the foundation everything else lives on, so don't rush it.

Step 3: Spray Honey Twist basecoat

The Honey Twist basecoat in the vehicle paint kit is ready to spray straight from the can — no reducer to mix. Tack again, then lay your Honey Twist passes wet but controlled, building coverage gradually until the candy is uniform across every panel. Final basecoat passes can be slightly farther from the panel to let the metallics lay flat — that's where the green/gold/bronze/copper colorshift reads its biggest. Watch for stripes between passes and fix them while the basecoat is still working.

Step 4: Clear with HS Glamour

Mix HS Glamour Clear (AC-4521) 2:1 with AH-7100 — no reducer needed. Lay even, wet coats and let the clear flow out fully between passes. The 4521 is a high-solids 2K that buries the metallic surface and locks in the candy depth, so your final wet coat is what gives you the glass-like finish you see in the hero shot. Don't fight it — let it do its job.

Step 5: Cut, buff, and finish

Once the clear is fully cured, cut and buff to bring out the final wet shine. Color-sand any imperfections out with a fine abrasive, then move through your buffing compounds to a finish polish. The Silverado in the photos is straight off the buffer — that mirror gloss is the payoff for not cutting corners earlier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The kit includes everything you need — DTM primer-sealer (your black ground coat), ready-to-spray Honey Twist basecoat, HS Glamour clearcoat, reducer, activator, and a step-by-step cheat sheet with mix ratios, flash times, and gun settings. Over 25,000 vehicles have been painted with TSS kits.
Not if you're using the vehicle paint kit. The Honey Twist basecoat included in the kit is pre-reduced and ready to spray right out of the can — no mixing cups, no measuring, no guessing. Just shake, pour, and spray.
No spray booth required. Many TSS customers paint in home garages. The keys are dust control (wet the floor, hang plastic sheeting), proper ventilation (at minimum a quality respirator and air movement), and following the cheat sheet for temperature and flash times. Spray when conditions are 65–85°F for best results.
A laminated guide covering every stage: mix ratios, flash times, coat counts, spray gun settings, and troubleshooting tips. It's included in every complete vehicle paint kit. Want it before you buy? Download the free PDF or order a free physical copy (just pay shipping).

Both — Honey Twist is Alpha's candy + colorshift hybrid. The candy carrier gives it the depth and saturation that flat metallics can't match, and the colorshift binder is what drives the green-dominant base into gold, bronze, copper, and orange tones as the light angle changes. It's a 4-8 color candy pearl basecoat, designed to read different every time you walk around the panel.

Black is the recommended ground coat for Honey Twist because that's how the color was designed to be sprayed — black delivers full coverage, the intended hue, and the depth and saturation the candy carrier was formulated to show. Every colorshift tone reads at its strongest over black. White will give you a brighter, lighter result but you lose the rich green-to-copper character that makes Honey Twist this color. The vehicle paint kit includes the recommended black sealer by default.

Yes — the Honey Twist spray can uses the same basecoat formula as the kit, so it's the right call for nicks, jamb touch-ups, and small repair work. For best color match, spray over the same black ground coat used on the original panel — that's how the candy and colorshift tones stay consistent with the surrounding paint.
