Fever Dream candy-pearl red 1958 Chevrolet Corvette by Auto Artistry

This 1958 Auto Artistry Corvette wears a two-tone nobody expects on a car this old: a deep candy-pearl red called Fever Dream over the body, with GM Sharkskin Silver in the factory side cove. Jerome Weiss sprayed it show-level and sent it toward the auction block.

Fever Dream is the kind of red that changes with the light — rich and dark in the shade, then it lights up in direct sun. Here is how the build came together and the exact system behind it.

Meet the Builder: Jerome Weiss

Jerome Weiss runs Auto Artistry, and this Corvette is exactly the refinish work the shop is built for: full prep, a booth, and no shortcuts between bare panel and final buff. Weiss ran the complete Alpha system on this car — DTM primer-sealer as the black ground coat, ready-to-spray Fever Dream basecoat, and HS Glamour clearcoat for the depth you see on the panels.

The Color: Why Fever Dream?

Fever Dream is one of Alpha's custom colors that blends three paint types into one — candy, pearl, and a traditional basecoat. You get the glassy depth and glow of a candy with the coverage of a basecoat, which is why the red reads so rich in the shade and then explodes under direct sun. On the curves of this Auto Artistry Corvette, that shift does most of the talking.

Fever Dream was designed to be sprayed over a black ground coat, and that is exactly what Weiss laid down first. The DTM black sealer gives the candy its intended foundation — full coverage, the true hue, and the depth the color was built to show. Every bit of that candy saturation comes from spraying it the way it was formulated to go down.

Every Way to Get Fever Dream

Whether you're painting a full vehicle, a motorcycle, a guitar, or just touching up with a spray can — Fever Dream is available for every project size. Each kit includes matched products sized for the job.

💡 Pro Tip

On a candy-pearl red like Fever Dream, consistency is everything: keep your gun distance and overlap identical on every pass so the pearl lays uniform. Uneven coats are what create light and dark spots in a candy — steady, even passes over a black ground coat give you that glassy, uniform red.

What's Inside the Vehicle Paint Kit

These are all the products included in the Fever Dream Full Vehicle Paint Kit. Every product is already matched and compatible — no hunting across brands, no guessing on ratios.

DTM Primer-Sealer (AP-7541) — The foundation. Sprayed as your black ground coat, DTM primer-sealer gives Fever Dream the dark base it was designed for and bites directly to properly prepped substrate.

Fever Dream Basecoat — Ready-to-spray Fever Dream basecoat — the candy-pearl red that carries the whole car. Mixes 1:1 with reducer and lays down with the depth of a candy.

HS Glamour Clear (AC-4521)HS Glamour clearcoat locks in the color and delivers the wet, glassy gloss that makes the red pop.

Alpha Urethane Reducer (AR-3000 Series)Alpha urethane reducer thins the basecoat to spray viscosity, matched to your shop temperature.

HS Activator (AH-7100 Series)HS activator kicks the clearcoat so it cures hard, glossy, and durable.

Optional Add-Ons

The vehicle paint kit has everything you need to go from prepped surface to finished paint. But depending on where your project is starting, these add-on bundles can save time and money on the prep and masking side:

The Complete DIY Process

Step 1: Prep and Bodywork

Every show finish is won in prep. On this Corvette that meant getting the panels dead straight and evenly sanded before any color went near them. Block with OptiGrit abrasives through the grades, keep your scratch pattern uniform, and clean the surface before you seal. A flat, consistent substrate is what lets a candy-pearl like Fever Dream read evenly instead of blotchy.

Step 2: DTM Black Sealer

Fever Dream was built to go over a black ground coat, so the first spray is DTM primer-sealer in black. This is the foundation the color was designed for: it delivers full coverage and the dark base that gives the candy its depth. Let it flash to a uniform, even sheen before you move to color.

Step 3: Fever Dream Basecoat

Mix Fever Dream basecoat 1:1 with Alpha urethane reducer and lay it over the black. Keep your passes even and your overlap consistent — with a candy-pearl, uniform coats are what build that rich, glassy red. Build until the color reads full and even across every panel.

Step 4: HS Glamour Clearcoat

Once the color is down, lock it in with HS Glamour clearcoat mixed with HS activator and a touch of reducer. The clear is where the gloss and depth come from: flow it out wet and even for that liquid look on the Fever Dream red.

Step 5: Cut and Buff

After the clear cures, cut and buff to take the finish from great to glass. Wet-sand with fine OptiGrit grades, then compound and polish until the reflections go dead flat. That final step is what earns this Auto Artistry Corvette its auction-ready shine.

Fever Dream is a candy-pearl. It blends candy depth, pearl glow, and a traditional basecoat in one product, which gives it the see-into-it richness of a candy without the trickier layering some straight candies need.

Because that is how the color was designed to be sprayed. A DTM black sealer gives Fever Dream full coverage and its intended depth — the red reads its richest over black. It is the foundation the candy was built on.

Yes. Fever Dream is also available as a spray can for small touch-ups and as a full vehicle kit if you are refinishing a panel, so you can match the color across formats.
